Draft Horses: Part 1

This page includes screenshots taken after the epilogue and may reveal locations and plot details. Horses acquired through missions are indicated but missions not detailed.  If you're only interested in the best horses available early game please check out the horse database at https://www.gtabase.com/red-dead-redemption-2/  where you can sort for availability.

Horses featured are available in Story mode only and are sorted first for availability and then statistics.

Aside from one exclusive Shire, draft horses can only be acquired through theft but all are available from Chapter 2 on. The Shire's best stat is Health, the Suffolk Punch's is Stamina and the Belgian's is Acceleration. All have heavy handling. Aside from the heavy handling, the extra point in Acceleration make Belgians a cut above most of the Riding class

RDR2-Raven Black Shire
Mounting from the rear is a surprisingly tricky maneuver and getting a photo even trickier. Perhaps the biggest horse in the game is not the best subject.

Raven Black Shire Acquired: Cheat code. Availability: Chapter 2  Unnamed.
Health 4, Stamina 4, Speed 3, Acceleration 2

This horse is actually acquired through a mission available in Chapter 2. I foolishly sold this horse not realizing that it is one of a few unique nonreplaceable horses in the game. I was forced to resort to a cheat code to get a photo. The Raven Black has the best draft horse stats and is gorgeous.

RDR2-Light Grey Shire
This is definitely not where I left Andre.

Light Grey Shire  Acquired: Stolen.  Availability: Chapter 2.  Name: Andre.
Health 4, Stamina 3, Speed 3, Acceleration 2.

Conveniently, Andre was left unattended on a farm just as we were passing by. I wanted to bond with at least one draft horse to level 4 and I was so taken with Andre's feathering and lustrous grey coat that it had to be him. I don't know what gets into me when I have a big horse. Maybe I just get over confident but I headed to an area not fully explored and led Andre into a series of events he just wasn't ready for. In my panic to escape, I made a wrong turn and ran straight into a massive gunfight. Andre fled and PC took cover. He was so rattled that I found him perched on top of a giant boulder when it was all over. I guess he thought it was safe there. On the bright side, he later took out three geese in about two strides and he did eventually get accustomed to gunfire. We also managed to run over an enemy NPC so I finally got that big ass horse kill I was wanting. For a draft horse, Andre was pretty restless when left untethered.

RDR2-Dark Bay Shire
I was trying to do a size comparison here but it didn't work out the way I hoped.

Dark Bay Shire. Acquired: Mission. Availability: Chapter 2. Unnamed.
Health 4, Stamina 3, Speed 3, Acceleration 2.

I did get this horse during a mission but other than the Raven Black draft horses are available to steal anytime. I just kept him long enough to get the photo.

RDR2-Red Chestnut Suffolk Punch
Having a bit of a morning stretch here.

Red Chestnut Suffolk Punch  Acquired: Stolen.  Availability: Chapter 2. Unnamed.
Health 3, Stamina 4, Speed 3, Acceleration 2.

I cut this one loose from a wagon during a mission. I had a little trouble keeping her going at a steady trot. For some reason I couldn't get into the rhythm. I was trying to get the morning sun to show off the rich chestnut coat but she's also showing off  her massive neck.
